Uganda has a remarkably high primate population, estimated to be the highest in the world. This is attributed to the vast natural forest cover and the increased conservation efforts that have seen the survival of a lot of wildlife more so the primates. Prominent of the primates are man's closest relatives, the Chimpanzees. Chimpanzees are fascinating wildlife due to the several human traits they exhibit. Chimpanzee tracking is a great wildlife experience as you get to observe these delightful primates in their natural habitat in addition to the thrilling forest/jungle experience.

UGANDA CHIMPANZEES & HABITUATION
Most chimpanzees are found in the gazetted game reserves including Kibale Forest National Park, Budongo Tropical Forest and Rabongo Forest in Murchison Falls National Park, Kyambura River Gorge in Queen Elizabeth National Park and Bwindi National Park. Sanctuaries have also been set up to cater for the vulnerable chimps especially those that have been rescued from poachers; a good example is Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary.
Naturally chimpanzees are wild and so do not tolerate humans. They usually flee and sometimes could get really aggressive and harmful. However groups of these chimps have been habituated. Habituation is delicate process through which humans make repetitive contact with the chimpanzees. The habituation process would last for more than six months. Habituated chimps for tracking can be found in Kibale National Park, Kaniyo Pabidi in Murchison Falls National Park, Kyambura Gorge in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kalinzu Forest and Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary.
GOING CHIMPANZEE TRACKING IN UGANDA
To go chimpanzee tracking in Uganda first you require a chimpanzee tracking permit. The cost of a chimp permit varies with the location. For instance it is USD150 in Kibale National Park, USD50 for Kyambura Gorge (Queen Elizabeth National) and Kaniyo Pabidi (Murchison Falls National Park). The cost would increase or decrease depending on the season. Two sessions of chimpanzee tracking are available per day. The first session (morning) commences at 8.00am and the second (afternoon) session commences at 2.00pm. Note that only 8 persons are permitted to track per session, hence a maximum of 8 permits are issued per session. Due to the limited permits issued per day, it is advisable you book your chimpanzee tracking safari way in advance, at least a month.
Before you embark on your chimp expedition, ensure you have the following items with you
- Hiking boots
- Insect repellant
- Rain coat or jacket
- Hat or cap
